Zoom Tips
- Use Mute. Put yourself on mute whenever you aren’t talking. While the host has the ability to mute individuals, you may also want to get good at using the mute button for yourself, to avoid distracting the other participants with background noise. This is especially important if you have 2 devices signed in at once.
- Change Your Display Name. The name in your profile will automatically be displayed to others. To change it when in a meeting click on “Participants” in the attendee controls, then on Windows or Mac hover over your name, click “More” and choose “Rename” or on iOS or Android just tap your name.
- Switch between Views. Gallery view lets you see small images of everyone in the meeting at once, instead of just the person speaking. To turn that on, click the button that says “Gallery view” in the top right corner. Depending on your device, you can see anywhere from 4 to 49 images on one screen. If there are more, you will have the option to move between multiple pages. Change it back by clicking “Speaker view.”
- Turn on the Beauty Filter. This filter aims to smooth over your appearance, making you look dewy and well-rested. If you’ve ever used beauty mode on your phone’s selfie camera, you know what you’re getting. To turn it on, click the up arrow next to Start Video. Click Video Settings, and under My Video, check the box for Touch Up My Appearance.
- Add a Profile Picture. When you are not showing video, rather than showing just your name, you can substitute an image such as a selfie by adding it to your Zoom Profile. Click on your name in the participant list, and then on the “More” button next to your name. You will then have an option to upload a picture from your computer or device.
- “Pin” Another Participant. Pin video allows you to disable active speaker view and only view a specific participant, whether he/she is speaking or not. Pinning another participant’s video will only affect your local view and local recordings, not the view of other participants.
- Always Display Names. To permanently ensure you never accidentally forget the name of the person you are talking to, you can turn this feature on permanently. Go to Settings > Video and check “Always display participant’s name on their videos.”
- Hide Non-video Participants. On a larger call, your screen can get cluttered with participants, which can be distracting, especially if some do not have their cameras on. Hide the participants who are not using video by going to Settings > Video > Meetings, and check “Hide nonvideo participants.”
- Customize Your Settings. In your Zoom app, you can set your settings that will apply to every Zoom meeting you attend. This includes your audio and video settings, your profile, Click here for instructions.
- Improve Your Internet Connection.
- Avoid other activities that steal bandwidth. Close out of any programs that are running in the background.
- Avoid activities on other devices that share your Internet connection, such as streaming video on a TV or downloading/uploading on another device.
- If you have an older webcam or microphone, consider upgrading your hardware.
- To improve video speed, disable HD video in your Zoom settings.
- Move your device closer to your router.
- Consider participating using audio and not video.
- In general, wired connections are better than WiFi connections, and WiFi is better than cellular.
- Upgrade your connection speed with your internet service provider.
What is Facebook Live?
Facebook Live is a live video streaming service on Facebook. Members can broadcast a live video and participants can watch and participate during the event, or watch the recording after.
How do I watch something on Facebook Live?
First, you need a Facebook account. If you don't have one, they're free, not hard to set up, and you can limit your participation to just watching Facebook Live events. If you already have an account, you can see Tifereth's Live events on the Tifereth Israel Facebook page. Here is a direct link: https://www.facebook.com/tiferethisraelsynagogue/
If you sign into Facebook during the event, you can participate by posting. After the event is over, the recording -- along with posts that were made during the event -- is available for viewing.
