Tifereth Israel Synagogue is excited to welcome our new Torah School and Youth Director, Cheryl Katz. Many of us know Cheryl from her time on staff at Tifereth Israel and as an active member of our congregation. We are pleased to welcome Cheryl to our professional team and as an integral member of our congregational family.

Cheryl has held educational leadership positions at several synagogues around San Diego before returning to Tifereth Israel. She taught 6th and 7th grade Hebrew and tutored b'nai mitzvah for many years. Currently she is part of the faculty at Community Jewish High (CJH). A passionate student of hazzanut, advocate for children and teens and seeker of vibrant spiritual experiences, she strives to spark authentic, deep, and enduring love of Judaism in students of all ages. Cheryl studied toward a Masters in Jewish Education at the Davidson School of Jewish Education at Jewish Theological Seminary.

Cheryl says “Before all else, I am a student and believe that learning can never be finished. I hope to instill the same lifelong quest for knowledge and desire for questioning in our students.”

She is thrilled to return to Tifereth Israel, serving the community that has been a spiritual and social home for her and her daughter Samantha for many years.

She will begin working on Monday, July 10th. The following week, Cheryl will spend time in Israel at an educational training. She will be back here to stay on Monday, July 24th. Once she begins, you may welcome her at or by phone at 619 697-6001, ext. 109.
