The Orchestra...

Tifereth Israel Community Orchestra, formerly known as the San Diego East County Jewish Community Center Symphony, was established in 1974 and now is in the middle of its 35th year of continuously serving the community at large with concerts of the orchestral classics, lighter works, new music, world premieres, and outstanding guest soloists. It began as a small chamber orchestra and continued to grow to its present size as a full symphony orchestra with approximately 75 musicians. Its affiliation with Tifereth Israel Synagogue took place in the summer of 1995. TICO’s members reside in San Diego County, Imperial County, and Baja California. The Orchestra is comprised of musicians of all faiths.

The Orchestra has presented many world premieres throughout the years, and has commissioned new works from several renowned composers. Its “Composer in Residence” series in the early 1990’s drew nationwide attention and praise for its innovative approach to community orchestra programming.

TICO has also become recognized as a workshop for musicians and composers from Southern California and has attracted internationally respected soloists who have performed with the world’s great orchestras. During the 2003-04 season, three eminent television and film composers wrote new works which were premiered by TICO; they were enthusiastically received by the audiences. This was followed by two new pieces in 2004-05, and during our last season, there were nine world premieres and new orchestral arrangements, exclusively written for TICO.

An important new direction for the Orchestra is to encourage talented young musicians to be part of its upcoming rehearsals and concerts. We invite interested people to contact us at the synagogue office, (619) 697 6001.
