The members of Tifereth Israel Synagogue’s Sisterhood provides support and assistance to Tifereth Israel Synagogue and the community at large.
We Serve Our Children
Sisterhood provides financial support to Tifereth Israel’s Silverman Preschool and Abraham Ratner Torah School, and provides holiday treats for the children. Sisterhood also awards scholarships to Camp Ramah each summer and funds special events for our children. This past year we donated a shofar to each and every Torah School student.
We Serve Our Congregation
Sisterhood also serves home baked sweets after Friday night and Saturday Shabbat Services. A tray of baked goods and a personal visit are shared with bereaved families during the week of shiva. Sisterhood members help the congregation plan, set up. and clean up various programs and activities through the year.
Sisterhood also makes substantial and generous donations to enhance the synagogue’s service to its members and community. The Traditions Gift Shop and Sisterhood’s fund-raising activities insure that Judaism will flourish and grow in San Diego.
We Serve Our Community: Social Action
Anne Heller, Coordinator
Tifereth Israel Sisterhood performs mitzvot outside the walls of the synagogue. We collect necessities for Rachel’s House, a shelter for abused women. We also collect eyeglasses for the San Diego Center for the Blind. We provide meals and food items for San Diego’s homeless through the Interfaith Coalition. We participate in food drives for community food pantries. We share and disseminate information about events and opportunities to assist those in need, regardless of faith.
Tikun Olam Club: Help Us Repair the Community
Ruth Braun, Coordinator
The Tikun Olam Club is a new program. Its purpose is to bring together adults within our community who share an interest in “repairing the world,” a concept known as Tikun Olam. Throughout the year, Sisterhood participates in projects that seek to remedy and address various needs within the community. Hunger is a priority need. Through the Tikun Olam Club program, we hope to build interfaith participation in addressing vital community needs.
Tikun Olam Club members will receive a package of benefits including:
- Invitations to participate in community events and Sisterhood social action projects.
- A restaurant discount dining card during your membership year, good for 2 for 1 entrees at hundreds of fine dining establishments throughout San Diego, in many US cities and in Canada, as well as other discounts.
- Other special benefits that may be available during the year.
*A Tikun Olam membership alone does not carry the rights and privileges that come with a traditional Sisterhood membership, unless it is purchased along with or in addition to a regular membership package.
For more information about the Tikun Olam Club, please email us.

Everyone shops so why not support our Sisterhood and our congregation at the same time?
How many gift cards did you buy last year? Now you can buy them and benefit Sisterhood and Tifereth Israel Synagogue. Keep them on hand for birthdays, bridal and baby showers, graduations, teachers, and more.
But don’t stop there! You already know where you shop and what you shop for. Shop with gift cards. You can spend them like cash and we’ll receive a percentage of the face value. Without changing their shopping habits, an average family can generate hundreds of dollars a year and we will reap the benefits. That’s a significant donation!
What vendors participate? Click here for a complete listing of shopping, dining, grocery, and entertainment options.
You can purchase gift cards online or phone our office at (619) 697-6001. If the cards are available, you will be able to pick them up at the synagogue office within 48 hours. If for any reason the cards are not immediately available, we will notify you on the next business day after you place your order. Your cards will be ordered and you’ll be contacted (usually within 10 days) when your order is ready for pick-up. If you do not see your favorite vendor or have a special request, you may call the office or email us and we will contact Judy Gumbiner. Our Sisterhood’s gift card program is growing and we all want to support this effort which, in turn, supports our congregation.
Every year, Sisterhood provides a beautiful Jewish Calendar to the entire membership of Tifereth Israel Synagogue. This project was made possible by the business advertisers and members who placed personal tributes. Read more about this project, and purchase your ad for the 2017-18 calendar.
Our heartfelt thanks to them.
Purchase a variety of delicious chocolate bars for $2.00 each, three for $5.00 and six for $10.00 from our gift shop Traditions. We also sell Sugar-free See’s candy.

Women’s League Torah Fund
Sisterhood is launching the 2016-2017 annual Torah Fund Campaign of the Women’s League of Conservative Judaism. The graduates of these schools continually enrich the quality of our lives as Conservative Jews.
